Sing! Karaoke Kiosk celebrated and shared, the multi-lingual culture of Vancouver. The kiosk offered songs in languages most spoken in Vancouver including English, Mandarin, French, Hindi, Spanish, Cantonese, Japanese, and Filipino.
The project was designed in response to observation by a Business Improvement Association director that attendance at neighbourhood events was often self-segregated by language. Sing! attempts use an activity that is popular across cultural communities as a way to bring people together in fun and shared experience.
The song list was accessible by computer, phone and at the kiosk via touchscreen. We designed the Kiosk to mark the space and serve as a backdrop for the performance while also housing the electrical equipment. Through minimal means, the Kiosk and carpet transformed the street and defined a performance space.
“We had so many requests for the kiosk to continue. People loved it.”, Vanessa Richards, Lead performer and local musician
